Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat esophageal complications. Find out more about the fundamentals of POEM procedure and how it has been found to improve patients’ lives below.
Understanding POEM
POEM can be used as a less-invasive alternative to Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy (LMH) with some serious benefits. Both procedures deliver similar results, but POEM is able to reach the esophagus without the need of small incisions. Because of this, POEM delivers a “scarless” result. Additionally, POEM exhibits lower costs than LHM thanks in part to shorter procedure times and a shorter hospital stay.
Is POEM Surgery Right For Your Patient?
The use of POEM depends on both the preference of the Advanced Endoscopist and if their patient qualifies for POEM vs LHM. Both procedures boast high success rates, with POEM being a shorter and more cost-effective option.
Similar to POEM, Douglas Adler, MD, utilizes Gastric Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (GPOEM) procedure in his practice. He recently recorded a GPOEM procedure using DuraClip™ to close the mucostomy.
