Commitment to Achieving Net Zero
CONMED UK is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline

Due to the complexity of this task and the availability of data, we have focused our efforts on calculating our operational carbon emissions (Scopes 1 and 2). We aim to widen the range of our data collection efforts to calculate the emissions associated with our value chain (Scope 3) over the next few years.

Year: January 1, 2022 – December 31, 2022

Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations.

This is the first year CONMED UK has reported on Scope 1 and 2 emissions. The figures below will also be used as a baseline to measure future progress on emissions reduction.

Due to the complexity of this task and availability of data, we have focused our efforts on calculating our operational carbon emissions (Scopes 1 and 2). Note the Scope 1 emissions total listed below is tentative as of September 1, 2023. We are in the process of reviewing the Scope 1 emissions resulting from the identified source of leased company vehicles and will update the emissions total as soon as we have completed our review of those source emissions.

As we develop our sustainability program, we aim to widen the scope of our data collection efforts to calculate the emissions associated with our value chain (Scope 3) for future years.

For the period of January 1, 2022 – December 31, 2022, note the following:

Scope 1: Gas consumption is due to the use of boilers and radiators in the office unit within a business park. The office unit is a rented space (8562 square feet). The related data was extracted from consumption invoices.

Scope 2: Electricity consumption is based in all electrical equipment to ensure the operational use of the office space unit (i.e. air conditioning units, electrical equipment, etc.). The office unit is a leased space (8562 square feet). Related data was extracted from utility bills.

Baseline Year Emissions:
EMISSIONS TOTAL (tCO2e)
Scope 1 Ton of CO2 e = 14.01
Scope 2  Ton of CO2 e = 9.56
Scope 3
Not included for this year
Total Emissions  Ton of CO2 e = 23.57

Current Emissions Reporting

As this is the first year we have reported on Scope 1 and 2 emissions, our current emissions reporting year is the same as our baseline year (January 1, 2022 – December 31, 2022).

Reporting Year: 2022
EMISSIONS TOTAL (tCO2e)
Scope 1  Ton of CO2 e = 14.01
Scope 2  Ton of CO2 e = 9.56
Scope 3  Not included for this year
Total Emissions  Ton of CO2 e = 23.57

Emissions Reduction Target

Because this is the first year CONMED UK has reported on scope 1 and 2 emissions, we have no previously set emissions reduction commitment.

We aim to contribute to the UK Government 2050 Net Zero Target and as such are committed to reducing the carbon emissions associated with our operations.

As we progress towards achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, we first aim to implement standardized and consistent emissions assessments and reporting. Instrumental in understanding our emissions in more detail, scope 3 can be broken down into 15 different categories that span both the upstream and downstream activities of an organization. Our first target is to identify those applicable categories and gather the required data that will allow CONMED UK to set actual emission reduction targets.

Carbon Reduction Projects

In the period leading up to 2022, CONMED established an Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) Program, which is cross-functional and global in nature, and includes oversight from the CONMED Corporation Board of Directors and strategic direction provided by a Steering Committee comprising senior management. CONMED UK’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, including the development of this Carbon Reduction Plan falls under the purview of the ESG Program.

Some specific initiatives relevant to this plan include:

  • CONMED is managing energy consumption through efficiencies and improvements, as well as by supplementing our energy sourcing with clean, renewable generated energy where appropriate. We have installed energy efficiency technology at our main manufacturing sites and aim to roll this our across all sites over time.
  • We place great emphasis on recycling or reuse of potential hazardous and non-hazardous waste. CONMED manufacturing operations has recycling programs such as eScrap, metal and machine turnings, cardboard, plastic, and paper.
  • Employees are given the training and resources necessary to achieve compliance and meet business goals to reduce our environmental impact.

Future Projects

As noted above, this is the first year CONMED UK has reported on scope 1 and 2 emissions. As we progress towards achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, we first aim to implement standardized and consistent emissions assessments and reporting. We believe accurate baseline data is critical to informing our nearer term emissions reduction targets. Additionally, we believe this data will best inform our identification of projects and initiatives that will reduce our emissions.

CONMED is committed to working with our employees, suppliers, and customers to protect the environment and in doing so, where possible, to systematically reduce our environmental impact, emissions, waste, and costs. Some of the ways we aim to achieve this include:

  • Using renewable energy sources where possible, as, for example, in our international manufacturing location.
  • Increase our employees’ awareness of the environmental impacts of their decisions and actions.
  • Monitor our environmental performance and collaborating with employees, suppliers, customers and regulatory bodies to make continual improvements.
  • Fulfill our compliance obligations, including applicable federal, state, local laws and regulations, as well as relevant international programs aimed at reducing harmful pollutants.
  • Include this Environmental Policy Statement in CONMED’s Supplier Code of Conduct, and work with suppliers to reduce our environmental impact where possible.
