Electrosurgical technology continues to evolve rapidly, particularly in the field of advanced endoscopic procedures like Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) and Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM). These techniques offer less invasive alternatives to surgery for gastrointestinal lesions and motility disorders, but they demand highly specialized tools—especially when it comes to energy delivery.

A recent study published in Clinical Endoscopy evaluated the performance of the Beamer CE600 Electrosurgical Platform, a unit developed specifically to meet the evolving needs of GI specialists. The findings underscore both the importance of precision energy control in Third Space procedures and the future potential of electrosurgical systems optimized for GI.*

Study Highlights: Beamer CE600 in ESD and POEM

The Beamer CE600 was developed to address a key challenge in advanced GI endoscopy: the variable tissue conditions encountered during submucosal dissection. Unlike traditional ESUs designed for general use, the Beamer CE600 introduces Automatic Cutting Effect (ACE) technology, which intelligently adjusts voltage, spark, and power to deliver consistent cutting performance and effective hemostasis.

Key features include:

Five dedicated endo-modes for varying coagulation needs

99 memory slots for customized procedural settings

A design specifically tailored for GI applications

Clinical Outcomes from Baylor St. Luke’s Study

In a study of 59 patients undergoing either ESD or POEM at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, the Beamer CE600 demonstrated:

Technical success in 90% of ESD cases and 100% of POEM procedures

An R0 resection rate of 77.1% and a curative resection rate of 70.8%

An overall adverse event rate of 12%, considered acceptable for these advanced techniques

The conclusion?

The Beamer CE600 is both feasible and safe for routine use in submucosal endoscopy procedures. The study authors note that future randomized trials are warranted to assess superiority over standard ESUs—but these early results are promising for the GI community.
