The purpose of this seminar is to provide perioperative nurses and other surgical team members information on patient safety during electrosurgical procedures. Fundamental principles of electricity and electrosurgery are addressed and guide the discussion towards the significance of creating a safe surgical environment and how to prevent potential hazards. • Describe the basics of electricity
• Define scientific terminology that governs the use of electricity in surgery

The purpose of this seminar is to educate perioperative nurses and other surgical team members on the technical, scientific, and patient care issues related to the use of bipolar electrical energy during surgical procedures. The main focus will be to contrast the more familiar monopolar mode with the bipolar mode and to stress patient safety issues. The purpose of this seminar is to acquaint perioperative nurses and other members of the surgical team with the risks associated with surgical smoke plume. Research has demonstrated that, annually, some 500,000 surgical team members are exposed to airborne contamination from surgical smoke. Frequently, patients are exposed to these same potential contaminants. Learning objectives include:

• Compare surgical smoke to cigarette smoke
• Discuss potential diseases that can occur from plume transmission

In order to properly apply this technology, a basic knowledge of electricity and its application to patient care procedures is necessary. Combining argon gas and electrosurgical energy to accomplish desired tissue responses require an awareness of specific patient safety considerations. The risks of surgical fires may never be completely eliminated, but they can be minimized by educating personnel, carefully investigating each incident, and reporting fires when they occur. This educational activity describes the elements of the fire triangle—ignition sources, fuels, and oxidizers—that are always present in the operating room. Actions that members of the surgical team can take to control ignition sources, minimize the presence of fuels, and limit oxygen concentrations are discussed. Steps personnel must take if a fire occurs are outlined. Sources of addition information are discussed and included in the handout material. Learning objectives include:

• Describe current density as it relates to the use of active electrode snares during polyp resection
• Discuss various active electrodes used in gastroenterology
• Differentiate the various patient return electrodes and their proper placement on patients
• Describe imperative safety measures when providing patient care during electrosurgical procedures
